There is no single fastest DNS server for everyone, so setting one up starts with testing rather than guessing. On most routers, log into the admin panel, often at 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1, find the WAN or DNS settings section, and enter the new addresses, such as 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8, in place of your ISP's default servers. On individual devices, DNS can be changed in the network adapter or Wi-Fi settings without touching the router at all. Because speed varies by location and provider, don't settle on the first server you try. Set up two or three candidates and compare them with a ping test to see which one actually responds fastest from your connection, then keep whichever performs best over a few days of normal use.
