Overview

IPv4 stands for Internet Protocol version 4. It's the fourth version of the IP system, and it uses a 32-bit address format. That means you can have over 4 billion unique addresses. You'll typically see an IPv4 address written out as four numbers separated by dots, like 192.168.1.1. Knowing your IPv4 address helps when you're trying to fix network problems or just want to understand your online setup better.

How It Works

Your ISP assigns your IPv4 address, and here's the thing - it can be either static or dynamic. A static IP doesn't change, but a dynamic one does over time. Finding your address is pretty simple. Just use an IP lookup service like MyIPNow, and it'll show you your current IP along with stuff like your location and ISP.

IPv4 vs IPv6

IPv4 is still everywhere, but IPv6 showed up because we're running out of IPv4 addresses. IPv6 uses a 128-bit system instead, which gives you way more addresses to work with.
